Our client, a software supplier with multiple locally distributed teams, was already delivering software applications in single and small agile environments. However, he was facing the challenge of inconsistent deliverables across teams, largely due to his rapid growth across multiple locations.
What we did
After a quick assessment and a series of workshops with our client, we found that the client’s agile practices were solidly implemented in the more mature teams, but lacked the staff and experience to consistently transfer that knowledge across all involved teams.
It was important to understand the client’s agile structures and their interpretation of the NEXUS framework, because too much change with a “new” approach could have resulted in side effects. Our approach had to build on what was working well and develop individual measures for organic growth for struggling teams.
To achieve this goal, we provided a dedicated Scrum Master team to coach the staff on a daily basis, always keeping in mind our client’s existing agile practices, while focusing heavily on improving cross-team learning and collaboration.
The trick was to manage the teams for scrum events and coach for quality of artifacts while implementing a consistent view of the teams’ progress through KPI reporting and SWOT analytics. This allowed our client to steer with targeted measures and achieve long-term results rather than one-time effects.
What we accomplished
Our Scrum Master’s ability to adapt to existing client structures and organizations allowed our client to identify which teams needed help and to develop dedicated actions for each team. This laid the foundation to reduce complexity, increase speed to achieve a high level of maturity, and make Agile clear and simple.
